Underground Forest

KUBO and Underground Forest collaborate to introduce foundation solutions that combine greenhouse construction with long-term CO2 storage. Together, we help growers and investors build more sustainably while contributing to a lower-carbon future.

KUBO partners with Underground Forest

KUBO Group has entered into a partnership with Underground Forest, an organisation that combines wooden pile foundations with long-term CO2 storage. This innovative approach aligns with our ambition to make greenhouse construction more sustainable and future-proof.

The first project to apply this solution is the new ACRES vegetable nursery on Groeneweg in ’s-Gravenzande, the Netherlands. This pilot marks an important step towards integrating biobased foundation methods into future greenhouse projects across the country.

Building foundations with climate impact

At the heart of the Underground Forest concept are wooden foundation piles made from sustainably sourced spruce trees. During their growth, these trees absorb significant amounts of CO2. Once installed below the groundwater level, the carbon stored in the wood remains locked away for an exceptionally long time.

This creates a unique opportunity to combine a functional construction solution with permanent carbon storage. The timber used is sourced from sustainably managed forests and meets PEFC certification standards, ensuring responsible forest management and no net loss of forest resources.

A sustainable choice with financial value

In addition to the environmental benefits, wooden pile foundations can also generate financial value for project owners. The CO2 stored in the wood is converted into tradable carbon credits that can be sold on the voluntary carbon market.

One carbon credit is issued for every tonne of CO2 permanently removed from the atmosphere. Revenue generated from the sale of these credits is shared with the landowner. Underground Forest manages the registration and trading process, requiring only a one-time transfer of carbon rights. No additional costs or obligations are involved for the owner.

KUBO as the connecting partner

As part of the partnership, KUBO supports customers throughout the process, providing technical, practical and administrative coordination. This makes it easier for greenhouse investors and growers to adopt a foundation solution that supports their sustainability goals while creating additional value.

The ACRES project serves as the first step in scaling this concept within the Dutch greenhouse sector. Together with Underground Forest, we are taking another step towards future-proof greenhouse construction that combines innovation, sustainability and measurable impact.

KUBO’s brand manifesto highlights sustainable growing, resource efficiency and building solutions for a growing world as core elements of its positioning.

About Underground Forest

Underground Forest develops wooden pile foundations that also store CO2 for the long term. By linking construction with the voluntary carbon market, the company helps make building projects more sustainable while creating value through carbon credits.
