Skavland gartneri grows norwegian tomatoes

Skavland Gartneri is a family-owned tomato grower on Talgje, an island outside Stavanger in Norway. With roots dating back to 1937, the company has grown into a modern tomato producer with 26,000 m² of greenhouse space and a dedicated team of around 70 employees.

The Challenge

Skavland Gartneri is located on Talgje, a small island outside Stavanger. The location offers excellent growing conditions, surrounded by fjords, sea and mountains, but it also presents practical challenges when it comes to greenhouse construction and expansion.

The new greenhouse is being built on Edwin Skavland’s farm, which he bought from a neighbour in 2024. Edwin and his twin brother Håkon are both trained heavy equipment operators. Håkon led the preparation and levelling of the site, with substantial support from Edwin. The work took ten months and involved approximately 30,000 m³ of solid rock.

Norway’s rocky terrain makes site preparation considerably more demanding than in the Netherlands. Creating a level site was therefore an essential first step before greenhouse construction could begin.

Skavland needed a greenhouse solution that would support efficient tomato production, day-to-day operations and the next phase of growth for the family business.

The Solution

In 2026, KUBO started construction of an 20,700 m² greenhouse for Skavland Gartneri. This follows the 26,000 m² of greenhouse space KUBO built for the company in 2013 and 2018. The new greenhouse will further expand Skavland’s tomato production capacity.

Skavland’s tomato range changes with the seasons. Its main production currently consists of Juanita and Edle, two sweet cherry tomato varieties grown on the vine and ideal for snacking. The company also grows large cluster tomatoes and plans to add beef tomatoes next season.

Skavland is also building a separate greenhouse to produce its own young plants. In addition to cultivation, the company operates its own packing facility, where tomatoes from Skavland and two other growers on Talgje are packed for distribution.

The surrounding sea gives Talgje a mild climate, while light reflected from the water provides favourable conditions for growing sweet, flavourful tomatoes. For Skavland, the combination of fjord, mountains and sea is an important part of what makes the local growing environment unique.

The Results

Skavland Gartneri has developed into a modern tomato-growing business with 26,000 m² of existing greenhouse space and around 70 employees. Approximately 80% are seasonal workers who stay for six months at a time. On an average day, around 50 people work across the business to keep production and operations running.

The packing facility plays an important role in these daily operations. Around 15 to 20 people work there each day, preparing tomatoes from Skavland and two other local growers for distribution.

Once completed, the new 20,700 m² KUBO greenhouse will provide Skavland with additional capacity for Norwegian tomato production. Through Gartnerhallen and BAMA, its tomatoes are distributed to stores across Norway.

The investment builds on the family’s long-standing experience in tomato growing and supports the next generation as it continues to develop the business.

About Skavland Gartneri

Skavland Gartneri is a family-owned tomato producer based on Talgje, outside Stavanger in Rogaland, Norway. The company is run by Edle and Håvard Skavland. Håvard represents the third generation of tomato growers in the family, continuing a tradition that began when his grandfather built one of the first greenhouses on Talgje in 1937.
Twins Edwin and Håkon Skavland, both 25, have worked in the business for several years. They are committed to running and developing the company in the future. The new greenhouse is being built on Edwin’s farm, while Håkon led the site preparation with substantial help from Edwin.[K4.1]
The family’s third son, aged 22, also worked full time in the business over the past year before following his ambition to become a firefighter. Together with their team, the family continues to invest in local tomato production and the future of the company.[

“A greenhouse starts with the grower’s ambition. The technology should serve that ambition—not the other way around.”
