High-tech chrysanthemum cultivation

Leen Middelburg Chrysanten is a family-owned chrysanthemum grower with more than 50 years of experience. What started in 1972, when Leen Middelburg converted his father’s tomato greenhouse into a chrysanthemum nursery, has grown into a leading company with multiple locations and a clear long-term vision. Their ambition is simple and strong. Growing the best chrysanthemums, all year round.

The Challenge

Leen Middelburg Chrysanten operates in a market where quality, reliability and sustainability are becoming more important every year. Chrysanthemum cultivation demands precision, consistency and a stable growing environment. At the same time, growers face rising expectations around energy use, water management, biological crop protection and emissions.

The company’s own ambition raises the bar even further. Leen Middelburg Chrysanten wants to keep growing, modernise its organisation and move towards more sustainable cultivation. Their Plan 2030 includes emission-free cultivation, 50% fossil-free operations by 2030 and 100% fossil-free operations by 2040.

The Solution

Leen Middelburg Chrysanten continues to invest in modern greenhouse cultivation. In 2022, the company made large-scale investments in LED lighting, air humidification and second energy screens. In 2023, the development process for Plan 2030 started. In 2025, the company expanded its area with a new 7-hectare greenhouse next to one of its current locations in Made. Another 7 hectares are planned on adjacent land as part of the same long-term plan.

Sustainability plays a practical role in this strategy. Across its locations, Leen Middelburg Chrysanten uses geothermal heat, LED lighting, solar panels and combined heat and power. The company also collects rainwater in its own water basins and filters drain water back into the basin, so water can be reused in the crop.

The company also focuses on biological crop protection and limiting the use of crop protection products. Investments in insect netting help prevent pests and diseases, while certifications such as MPS-GAP, MPS A, MPS-GRASP and PlanetProof support their commitment to responsible cultivation.

The Results

Leen Middelburg Chrysanten has grown from a single converted tomato greenhouse into a large-scale chrysanthemum company with multiple locations. By 2008, the company had reached 150,000 m² of greenhouse area. With the 2025 expansion in Made, another 7 hectares were added, with an additional 7 hectares planned as part of Plan 2030.

The company combines growth with a clear sustainability agenda. By investing in energy, water and crop protection measures, Leen Middelburg Chrysanten works towards lower emissions, better resource efficiency and consistent crop quality. This makes the company a strong example of how modern floriculture can scale responsibly.
